1. In the UK, around 7 in every 1000 people have BPD.

2. About 1 in 10 people with BPD die from suicide.

3. About 1.6% of the American population have BPD, which is over 14 million people. 

4. 75% of people diagnosed with BPD are women.

5. BPD is often misdiagnosed; a recent study suggests over 40% of people with BPD have been previously misdiagnosed with other disorders like bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder.

6. After 10 years following hospitalisation, 86% of people with BPD stopped meeting the diagnostic criteria for at least 4 years, and 50% of people recovered completely. Some had treatment but some did not. 

7.  More people have BPD than schizophrenia and bipolar disorder combined.

8. BPD is the third leading cause of death for young adult women between 15-24.

9. Up to 80% of those with BPD engage in suicidal behaviours including cutting, burning, hitting or otherwise harming themselves.
